  • 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks per day is recommended. Do not skip meals. Make sure you include an evening snack that contains protein (i.e., yogurt, milk, cheese, hummus, nuts, peanut butter) and carbohydrates (i.e., crackers, bread, fruit, milk, yogurt, popcorn, cereal).
  • Try to eat your meals and snacks around the same time daily.
  • Eat plenty of dietary fiber from foods such as 100% whole grain breads, cereals and pastas, fresh fruits, vegetables, dried beans.
  • Minimize high fat and fried foods such as deep fried foods and chips, excessive use of butter/margarine, gravies and dressings.
  • Refrain from large or frequent intake of sugary foods such as:
    • sugar
    • Kool-Aid
    • pie
    • candy
    • juice
    • donuts
    • regular pop
    • honey, molasses, syrup
    • cakes, cookies
    • jelly
    • ice cream
    • pastries
  • Exercise regularly – maintain your current exercise routine unless your doctor states otherwise.
