Acne, a dreaded word for so many teenagers and adults. Acne can be difficult to treat and can result in acne scarring. When acne scars occur microneedling is an effective treatment, particularly for depressed scars. This is when the skin tissue is damaged and sunken. Microneedling is not recommended for raised acne scars.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stimulate collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are essential for skin structure. This helps fill in depressed scars and improve overall skin texture. The procedure involves utilizing a device that contains small, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural healing responses, resulting in the increased production of collagen and elastin.

Depending on how deep the acne scars are will determine how many treatments will be needed. This will vary from person to person. The recommendation is a minimum of 4 one-hour treatments 3-4 weeks apart and it is crucial for the patient to follow this schedule to ensure that the proper stimulation of the collagen and elastin occurs.

It is always best to be seen by the technician performing the microneedling treatments to see if you are a good candidate and discuss approximately how many treatments will be needed. The microneedling function DC&G uses is SkinPen, and additional information on the SkinPen procedure can be found here.
